Moving up the risk spectrum they can provide exposure to early stage investments.
Doherty added: "Equally illiquidity premium can certainly be a benefit in the long term but that needs to meet and align with the clients investment journey.
"As a manager of model portfolios a lot of our exposure is through investment trusts and the REITs approach, which gives a combination of permanent capital investments but through shares also being traded on an exchange. That is often a way we can gain exposure to some of these themes for clients.
"That can come at time with liquidity challenges or a disconnect between the share price of the company and its quoted NAV.
"But really all these factors have to be considered in terms of portfolio construction and the means of accessing these investments is really something that needs to be considered when building exposure for clients."
